Sahet, Mahet, Sahet Mahet
The ancient city of Shravasti, today is a spreading of ruins, that is known by the couple names, as Sahet Mahet.
Sahet:
This famous site, as Sahet is located on the Balrampur to Bahraich main road, just north side, near about of 400 meters.It consist mainly of plinths and foundations of monasteries and stupas related to Lord Gautam Buddha.It was the most famous site of Budhist Monastery, known as JETAVANA MAHAVIHARA, At present, here are only the founadations of some remains like Temples, Stupas, Monasteries as like Gandha Kuti, Kosamba kuti, and Jetavana Garden.where Lords Buddha stayed and used to deliver sermons.
This famous budhist monasteries, Jetavana Vihara, was constructed by Sudata ( Anathpinika ), after purchasing garden of Jeta, was the son of king Prasenjita. Also a most famous Ananda Bodhi Tree is today stood and survives here, from Budhism tradition.
Mahet: ( Shravasti City )
Where Mahet is situated about half K.M north side of the Sahet, famous by the Shravasti city. It is situated south side of the famous Rapti river, Its old name was Achiravati, which flows a few distance away.
The entire city was fortified whose remains are at present seen in the high earthern ramparts surrounding it.This site is larger than Sahet in area wise. Here the five Gateways of city wall, as described in Buddhist literature like Rajgarh Darwazas, Naushera Darwazas, kandbari Darwazas, Somnath Darwazas and Imli Darwazas, may be seen even currently by the evidence of their dilapidated remains.
The main road of Balrampur and Bahraich, linked with Sobhnath Darwaza of Mahet, by a branch road.
Two famous stupas of this site are Angulimala Stupa, also known as Pakki Kuti, and second is Sudata Stupa, as known as Kachchi Kuti.
